Vishwanath and Shakti Temples, Uttarkashi

Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand

The Vishwanath Temple is the main shrine of Uttarkashi, the 'Kashi of the North', and is dedicated to Shiva. The Shakti Temple stands opposite, known for its tall trishul. Uttarkashi is the base for Gangotri, so most pilgrims stop here on their way, and the two temples are an easy, calm visit between the two longer driving days.

What to see and do

  • Have darshan of Shiva at the Vishwanath Temple
  • See the Shivling and the old stone courtyard
  • Visit the Shakti Temple opposite and look at the tall trishul, about 6 metres high
  • Walk in the old bazaar around the temples

Ideal for

  • Devotees of Shiva and the Goddess
  • Pilgrims breaking the journey to Gangotri
  • Travellers who want a gentle, short visit

Good to know

  • Timings are not confirmed, so check locally
  • The temples are in the town centre, so they are easy to combine with a hotel stay in Uttarkashi
  • Dress modestly; shoes are left outside
  • The trishul is not to be touched, and local customs apply
  • Allow about 45 minutes for both temples

Spiritual significance

Uttarkashi takes its name from Kashi, and tradition says the town is a northern counterpart of Varanasi. Shiva is worshipped here at the Vishwanath Temple, and the Shakti Temple's trishul is said in local faith to have been thrown by the Goddess at demons.

Why it matters

  • The Kashi of the north: a Himalayan counterpart to Varanasi
  • Shiva and Shakti together: the two temples face each other
  • A resting place on the yatra: the usual overnight stop before Gangotri
