Vishram Ghat and Yamuna Aarti, Mathura
Mathura, Uttar Pradesh
Vishram Ghat is the main ghat on the Yamuna in Mathura, where tradition says Krishna rested after killing the tyrant Kansa. Pilgrims bathe here before visiting the temples, and each evening the ghat hosts the Yamuna aarti, with lamps, bells and boats on the water. Boat rides here show the old river-front of Mathura, a row of temples and arches.
What to see and do
- Watch the evening Yamuna aarti from the steps or from a boat
- Take a short boat ride and see the ghats and temples from the river
- Sprinkle or bathe in the Yamuna water, as pilgrims do
- Walk along the ghats and see the small shrines
Ideal for
- Pilgrims who want a river ritual in Mathura
- Families and first-time visitors
- Anyone who enjoys sunset and evening light
Good to know
- Aarti timings change with the season, so check locally, and arrive early for a good place
- Boat fares are not fixed, so agree on the price before you board
- Keep bags and phones safe, and take care on the steps
- The river is shallow and not always clean, so bathing is a personal choice
- It is close to Dwarkadhish Temple and Janmabhoomi
Spiritual significance
The name Vishram Ghat means 'the ghat of rest'. It is the traditional place to bathe in the Yamuna and begin a Mathura pilgrimage, and its evening aarti is the best-known river ritual in town.
Why it matters
- Where Krishna rested: tradition links the ghat with the end of Kansa's story
- The Yamuna aarti: a calm evening ritual on the river
- The starting point of the yatra: pilgrims bathe here before temple visits
