Shri Sai Baba Samadhi Mandir, Shirdi

Shirdi, Maharashtra

The Samadhi Mandir in Shirdi is the shrine of Sai Baba, the beloved saint who lived in the village from the 1850s until his death in 1918. His marble statue sits over his samadhi, and devotees of every faith come for darshan and the daily aartis. Around the temple are the places linked with his life: Dwarkamai, the old mosque where he lived, Chavadi, where he is said to have slept on alternate nights, Gurusthan, the neem tree where tradition says he first appeared, and Lendi Baug, the garden he tended. The sacred fire (dhuni) at Dwarkamai gives the ash (udi) that is given as prasad.

What to see and do

  • Have darshan of Sai Baba at the Samadhi Mandir
  • Attend an aarti, if you have booked a pass: the day has four, from early morning to night
  • Visit Dwarkamai, where the sacred fire (dhuni) still burns
  • See Chavadi and the Gurusthan neem tree, and walk through Lendi Baug

Ideal for

  • Devotees of Sai Baba from all backgrounds
  • Families, elders and first-time pilgrims
  • Travellers who want a peaceful, well-organised temple town

Good to know

  • Darshan and aarti passes are booked online through the Sai Sansthan, and aarti passes are booked separately from darshan passes (one guide gives about Rs 200 for darshan and Rs 400 to 600 for aarti, unconfirmed)
  • Aarti times are given differently by different sources, roughly Kakad about 5:15 am, Madhyan about noon, Dhoop at sunset and Shej about 10 pm, so confirm on the official site
  • Thursdays, weekends and festivals are the busiest, with waits of 3 to 4 hours reported
  • Phones, bags and cameras usually need to be left in lockers, so ask on arrival
  • Dress modestly, and remove shoes at the entrance

Spiritual significance

Sai Baba's teaching of faith (shraddha) and patience (saburi) draws pilgrims from every community. Shirdi is a place where devotion is open to everyone, and the temple trust runs the town's queues, lockers and free meals.
