Shiv Khori Cave Temple, Reasi
Ransoo, Jammu and Kashmir
Shiv Khori is a natural cave temple of Lord Shiva in the hills of the Reasi district, reached from the base village of Ransoo. The cave is described as 150 to 200 metres long, with a narrow passage at places where one almost has to crawl, and it holds a self-manifested (swayambhu) Shivling, about 4 feet high. Natural water drips onto the lingam from above, and the Shrine Board describes it as milky. A major fair is held here on Mahashivratri.
What to see and do
- Have darshan of the swayambhu Shivling in the cave
- Walk the track from Ransoo to the cave, about 3 km on foot
- See the natural dripping of water over the lingam
- Enjoy the hills and the forest of the Reasi district
Ideal for
- Shiva devotees who want a natural cave temple
- Pilgrims who add Shiv Khori to the Vaishno Devi yatra
- Families who can manage a short walk and a narrow cave
Good to know
- Estimates put it 70 to 80 km from Katra, a drive of about 3 hours each way, so it makes a long day
- Buses and light vehicles go up to Ransoo, and the walk to the cave is about 3 to 4 km
- The passage is very narrow in places, and may be difficult for elders or for anyone with a bad back
- One source says registration is mandatory, so check the current rules with the Shrine Board
- Opening hours are not confirmed, so check locally, and expect very large crowds on Mahashivratri
Spiritual significance
Shiv Khori is one of the best-known Shiva shrines of Jammu, set in a natural cave. For many pilgrims, it is the second great darshan after Vaishno Devi.
Why it matters
- A natural Shiva cave: a self-manifested Shivling about 4 feet high
- A narrow cave passage: an adventure as well as a pilgrimage
- A major fair: Mahashivratri draws very large crowds
