Savitri Mata Temple, Pushkar

Pushkar, Rajasthan

The Savitri Mata Temple stands on a hill above Pushkar, and it is dedicated to Savitri, the wife of Brahma. It gives the best view over the town and the lake, and many visitors come for the view as much as for the darshan. You can climb the hill, about 15 minutes on over 200 steps by one account, or go up by ropeway. The temple is especially lovely at sunrise and sunset.

What to see and do

  • Have darshan of Goddess Savitri at the hilltop temple
  • Enjoy the wide view over Pushkar town and the lake
  • Ride the ropeway, or climb the steps
  • Watch the sunset from the hill, if your timing allows

Ideal for

  • Visitors who like views and short climbs
  • Families, with the ropeway for elders and children
  • Photographers

Good to know

  • The ropeway runs roughly 8 am to 7 pm by most sources, with a round-trip fare of about Rs 160 to 165, but the hours and fares change, so check locally
  • The climb is about 15 minutes from the lake, over 200 steps, and monkeys on the stairs can be aggressive, so hold your food and bags
  • One source says the temple is open about 6 am to 6 pm, and others say it has a midday break, so check locally
  • Photography may be restricted at the temple, so ask at the entrance
  • Allow about 1.5 hours with the ropeway

Spiritual significance

Savitri is honoured at Pushkar as the wife of Brahma, and her hilltop temple is the quiet counterpart to the busy lake below. It is the place from which Pushkar is best seen.

Why it matters

  • The wife of Brahma: Savitri is worshipped at her own hilltop temple
  • The best view in Pushkar: over the lake and the town
  • An easy climb: by steps or by ropeway
