Rukmini Devi Temple
Dwarka, Gujarat
Rukmini Devi Temple, a short drive from the main Dwarkadhish Temple, is dedicated to Rukmini, Krishna's chief queen. It stands a little outside the town in a quiet setting. The carved stone shrine is much admired, and the temple is linked to a well-known legend of the sage Durvasa's curse.
What to see and do

Ideal for

- Heritage and architecture lovers
- Travellers who prefer a quieter temple
Good to know
- One listing gives about 7:30 am to 8 pm, but check locally
- It is about 2 km from the main temple, so the usual way is a short cab or auto ride
- Dress modestly; shoes are left outside
- Sources disagree about its age: the present building is often dated to the 12th century, though tradition says the shrine is much older
- Giving water is the traditional offering here, as it recalls the legend
Spiritual significance
In the story, Rukmini and Krishna were cursed to live apart after the sage Durvasa took offence over water. The temple is why Rukmini has her own shrine away from Krishna's.
Why it matters
- The queen of Dwarka: the temple honours Krishna's chief consort
- The curse of Durvasa: the legend of why she is separate from the main temple
