Ramkund

Nashik, Maharashtra

Ramkund is the main bathing ghat on the Godavari in Panchavati, the heart of old Nashik. It is the most visited spot in the city, busy from early morning with pilgrims bathing, praying and performing rites for their ancestors.

What to see and do

  • Take a holy dip in the kund, as pilgrims have done for generations
  • Offer pind daan, or immerse the ashes of loved ones
  • Walk to Kapaleshwar Mahadev, Sundarnarayan, Kalaram Mandir and Sita Gufaa, all within a few minutes

Good to know

  • It is the main bathing site of the Nashik Simhastha Kumbh Mela
  • Dress modestly, keep your belongings safe in the crowd, and do not bathe when the river is in flood

Spiritual significance

Ramkund is the place where tradition says Lord Rama, Sita and Lakshmana took their ritual baths during the years of exile in Panchavati. The Lakshmana Kund and Sita Kund lie close by.

Why it matters

  • A dip here is believed to wash away sins, and immersing ashes is believed to bring peace to ancestors
  • A second belief links the kund to the drops of nectar that fell during the churning of the ocean
  • Every twelve years the Simhastha Kumbh Mela is centred here, when saints and lakhs of pilgrims bathe on the main days
  • The 2027 main bathing days announced for Nashik are 2 August, 31 August and 11 September (confirm closer to your travel)
