Ram Jhula and Swarg Ashram

Rishikesh, Uttarakhand

Ram Jhula is the pedestrian suspension bridge across the Ganga, joining the temple lanes of Swarg Ashram on one bank with the ashrams of Muni Ki Reti on the other. The walk along the ghats at sunset is the classic Rishikesh stroll, with bells, chai stalls, sadhus and the river in the changing light. Swarg Ashram's lanes are lined with small shops, cafes and ashrams.

What to see and do

  • Walk across Ram Jhula at golden hour and watch the river from the middle
  • Stroll the Swarg Ashram ghats and the lanes of shops and cafes
  • See the ashram buildings and the temple towers along the bank
  • Stop for a chai or a vegetarian meal at a riverside cafe

Ideal for

  • First-time visitors to Rishikesh
  • Photographers and sunset lovers
  • Anyone who likes slow walks, cafes and people-watching

Good to know

  • The bridge is for pedestrians only, and two-wheelers and monkeys share the crowd, so keep belongings secure
  • It is open at all hours with no entry fee, and evenings are the busiest
  • Rishikesh is vegetarian and alcohol-free, and signs near the ghats ask visitors to respect that
  • Wear sturdy sandals, as the lanes and steps can be uneven
  • The nearby lanes are the best place to buy simple souvenirs and prayer beads

Spiritual significance

Ram Jhula and the Swarg Ashram lanes are the most walked part of Rishikesh, where the ashrams, the bridge and the river come together. A short walk here shows you the town's pace and mood.

Why it matters

  • The classic Rishikesh walk: the river, the bridge and the ashram lanes together
  • Ashrams on both banks: the heart of the yoga town
  • Golden-hour views: the best light for photographs is at sunset
