Mamleshwar Temple
Omkareshwar, Madhya Pradesh
Mamleshwar, also called Amareshwar, is the paired shrine of the Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga, on the opposite bank of the Narmada, about a kilometre from the island temple. Pilgrims traditionally visit both on the same trip, and one guide suggests beginning at Mamleshwar before crossing to the island.
What to see and do
- Have darshan at Mamleshwar
- See the old stone temple near the Narmada
- Walk to the ghats and the bridge to Omkareshwar
Ideal for
- Pilgrims completing the Omkareshwar darshan
- Devotees of Shiva
- Travellers who want a quieter stop than the main temple
Good to know
- Darshan at one of the two is traditionally considered incomplete without the other
- Dress modestly; footwear is left outside
- Check timings locally, as small temples often close at midday
- The bank and exact distance differ in some sources, so ask a local guide
Spiritual significance
Omkareshwar and Mamleshwar share the honour of this Jyotirlinga, and the Narmada flows between them.
Why it matters
- The twin of Omkareshwar: pilgrims see both shrines
- A quieter darshan: often less crowded than the island temple
- Narmada setting: a calm river bank
