Kapila Theertham, Tirupati

Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh

Kapila Theertham is the sacred waterfall and Shiva temple at the foot of the Tirumala hills, a few kilometres from Tirupati town. Water from the hills falls over red rock into a temple tank, and the Kapileswara Swamy shrine stands beside it. It is the main Shiva temple of Tirupati and a calm, scenic break between the Vishnu temples.

What to see and do

  • See the waterfall dropping into the temple tank, best after the rains
  • Have darshan of Kapileswara Swamy and the Nandi
  • Sprinkle or take the holy water, as pilgrims do
  • Walk around the pillared mandapams beside the tank

Ideal for

  • Devotees of Shiva visiting Tirupati
  • Families and photographers who enjoy waterfalls
  • Anyone who wants a quieter, greener stop

Good to know

  • Distance sources differ, roughly 4 to 5 km from Tirupati railway station, so ask your driver
  • Timings are not confirmed, so check locally
  • The waterfall can be weak or dry in the hot, dry months
  • Bathing may be restricted, and the steps can be slippery
  • Maha Shivaratri and the Kartika month are the busiest times

Spiritual significance

Kapila Theertham is the Shiva temple of the Tirumala hills, where the shrine and the waterfall are part of the same sacred spot. Pilgrims often visit it to balance the Vishnu pilgrimage with a visit to Shiva.

Why it matters

  • Shiva at the foot of Venkateswara's hills: the main Shaiva shrine in the area
  • A waterfall inside a temple: the sacred water falls beside the shrine
  • A tank for rituals: the holy water is used by pilgrims
  • A green, calm stop: a good change of pace in the day
