Kal Bhairav Mandir, Varanasi

Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh

Kal Bhairav Mandir is dedicated to Bhairav, the fierce form of Shiva, who is regarded as the kotwal, the guardian or police chief, of Kashi. Pilgrims traditionally seek his blessing in Varanasi, because the city is believed to be watched over by him. The temple is in the old part of the city, close to Dashashwamedh Ghat.

What to see and do

  • Have darshan of Kal Bhairav
  • Offer prayers and the traditional offerings, as the priests guide you
  • See the old lanes around the temple
  • Combine it with Kashi Vishwanath and Dashashwamedh Ghat

Ideal for

  • Devotees of Shiva and Bhairav
  • Those seeking protection and courage
  • Pilgrims who want the guardian shrines of Kashi

Good to know

  • One listing gives timings of about 5 am to 10 pm, but check locally as they can change
  • It is in a narrow lane, so go on foot or by rickshaw
  • Dress modestly; footwear is left outside
  • Tuesdays and Sundays are the busiest days, and Bhairav Ashtami is very crowded
