Gangotri Temple
Gangotri, Uttarakhand
Gangotri Temple stands on the bank of the Bhagirathi in Uttarkashi district and is dedicated to Goddess Ganga. It is the second stop of the Char Dham yatra and the nearest road-reachable shrine to the source of the Ganga. A vehicle road reaches close to the temple, and the setting among deodar forest and snow peaks is quiet and cool even in summer.
What to see and do
- Have darshan of Goddess Ganga at the white temple
- Join the evening aarti on the river bank, if timings allow
- See Bhagirath Shila, the rock where tradition says King Bhagirath did penance
- Take a bath or sprinkle the cold river water at the ghat
- Walk to Surya Kund and the iron bridge, a short stroll from the temple (sources differ on the exact spot, so ask locally)
Ideal for
- Pilgrims doing the full Char Dham
- Devotees of the river Ganga
- Families who want an easy, drive-up Himalayan shrine
Good to know
- I found no official darshan or aarti timings, so check locally
- The temple is open only in the pilgrimage season, roughly from Akshaya Tritiya (April or May) to around Diwali (early November), and the dates change each year
- In winter the goddess is moved to Mukhba village near Harsil
- The river water is icy, so be careful if you bathe
- Gaumukh, the glacier source, is a separate trek of about 18 to 19 km each way and is not part of this visit
- Fuel up before the drive, as there is no petrol pump between Uttarkashi and Gangotri
Spiritual significance
Tradition tells that King Bhagirath prayed here for the Ganga to come down to earth and free his ancestors. Sources differ on the history of the present temple, which is often credited to the Gorkha commander Amar Singh Thapa in the early 19th century.
Why it matters
- The Ganga's home shrine: the river goddess is worshipped near her source
- Bhagirath's penance: the story of the Ganga's descent is told at the rock
- Second of the Char Dham: the second stop in the usual yatra order
- A seasonal temple: the winter move to Mukhba is a tradition in itself
