Devprayag Sangam
Devprayag, Uttarakhand
Devprayag is the sacred confluence where the Alaknanda and the Bhagirathi meet and, from here on, are called the Ganga. The two rivers join in front of you, one a clear green and the other a muddier colour, and pilgrims bathe at the steps. The Raghunath Temple, dedicated to Rama, stands above the town.
What to see and do
- Stand on the steps at the point where the two rivers meet and watch the colours blend
- Offer prayers or bathe at the ghat
- Visit the Raghunath Temple above the sangam
- Stretch your legs on the long drive up the valley
Ideal for
- Pilgrims on the road to Kedarnath and Badrinath
- Travellers who like river confluences
- Anyone wanting a calm, scenic break
Good to know
- It is a short stop of about 30 to 45 minutes, usually on the way
- The steps down to the sangam are steep, so wear good shoes
- Do not bathe if the river is high, especially in the monsoon
- Dress modestly at the temple
Spiritual significance
Devprayag is the first of the five sacred confluences (Panch Prayag) of the Alaknanda, and it is where the Ganga takes her name.
Why it matters
- Where the Ganga is born: the meeting of the Alaknanda and the Bhagirathi
- Panch Prayag: the first and best known of the five sacred confluences
- Raghunath Temple: a Rama temple above the town
