Bet Dwarka
Bet Dwarka, Gujarat
Bet Dwarka is a small island off the coast near Okha, and tradition holds that it was Krishna's family residence, while Dwarka was the seat of his court. The temple here is dedicated to Krishna and is reached by a short boat ride across the sea inlet from the Okha jetty. The island has other small shrines and a quiet village feel, and the sea crossing is part of the experience.
What to see and do
- Take the short boat crossing from Okha and enjoy the sea and the birds
- Have darshan of Krishna at the island's main temple
- See the other small shrines on the island
- Spend a little time on the shore
Ideal for
- Pilgrims who want the full Dwarka circuit
- Travellers who like a short boat ride
- Families who are happy with a few short walks
Good to know
- The boat is the usual way across; fares were reported at around Rs 20 per person in older accounts (an estimate), and boats may wait until full, so allow time
- Check whether the newer road link to the island is open before you plan the crossing, as this may change the usual route
- Timings are not confirmed: the temple may close in the afternoon, so go in the morning and check locally
- Phones and cameras may be restricted inside the temple
- Wear modest clothes and shoes that are easy to slip off; there is some walking from the jetty (around 700 metres, by one account)
Spiritual significance
Bet Dwarka is described in local tradition as where Krishna's family lived and where he met his friend Sudama. Pilgrims often see it as the necessary companion to Dwarka.
Why it matters
- Krishna's home island: tradition links it to his family residence
- A sea crossing: the journey is part of the pilgrimage
- Part of the Dwarka circuit: usually visited together with Nageshwar
